Cellulite affects women more than men and as MayoClinic.com states, 8 out of 10 women suffer from cellulite. Cellulite is not considered as a serious medical condition and does not need treatment. Because it looks like a cottage cheese, women seek treatment for aesthetic reasons as the cellulite may look very unsightly.
The skin looks dimpled or bumpy when one has cellulite. This occurs differently from one person to another as the severity of it varies. We can say that the cellulite is only mild when we pinch the skin not unlike severe cases that shows bumpiness and very obvious uneven shape of the skin. Cellulite can be seen on any part of the body but most likely, it appears on the hips, buttocks, hips and abdomen.
Causes of Cellulite
The formation of cellulite starts when the fibrous connective cords which connect the skin to the muscle and when fat accumulates in the space between the skin and the muscle. Then, the fibrous cords pull down on the skin and attach it to the muscle and sometimes it pushes up on the skin. This condition leads to an uneven pulling and pushing of the skin which results to dimpled skin referred to as cellulite. There are several factors that affect cellulite, some are controllable and some are not. Too much fat can be controlled through diet but hereditary affects also cellulite and this is out of control.
The Use of Foam Roller
A foam roller is a type of instrument which can be used to massage cellulite. It is a long tube of tense foam and comes in different colors and sizes. The use of foam roller allows you to perform self-myofascial release massage by your own self. The fascia is a soft-tissue that covers the body’s connective tissue including the muscles. Since the fascia is prone to overuse, tension and trauma, you have to roll gently the foam roller on the affected area to stretch and release the fascia.
Benefits of Foam Roller
The foam roller when used for massage releases tensions as well as smoothens out abrasions in restricted fascia. The result is like receiving a deep tissue massage. You can use the foam roller before and after a workout in order to promote flexibility and enhance healing too. Foam roller eases tension around the joints and at the same time assists in loosening tight muscles and tissues like the iliotibial band. The iliotibial band (IT) is a layer of connective tissue that runs down to the outer thigh, going to your hip and unto the knee. It’s natural for the IT band to be tight and inflamed particularly among runners.
Combination of Treatments for Cellulite
The use of foam roller will not completely removed cellulite. The MayoClinic.com said that the only treatments for cellulite are radiofrequency and laser treatment and these two are performed in a doctor’s office. Massage is not a long term solution and not a reliable one for the treatment of cellulite. A foam roller contributes in the improvement of the texture of the skin but the effects remains for a short period only.
Foam roller gives a temporary relief on the appearance of cellulite. But in order to meet desirable results, other treatments for cellulite must be done on combination with the use of derma roller.
